Flavia and the Dream Maker
Donated to the Lisbon Public Library in memory of Thomas Haggard (1968-1989) by Bethany Stevens. Children's Literature: Flavia lives with her grandmother, mother, little brother, and Uncle Jack. We share her search to be different–her yearning for another name, house, and street. Uncle Jack, who seems like big brother to her, gives her his secret of how to keep smiling. He reaches into his magic bag and gives her a handful of paper stars. Flavia is made to see the value of her name and surroundings, but also that it is important to never stop dreaming. Dust jacket copy implies that this is the author's real life story. The dedication "To my Dream Maker, 1st Lt. Jack R. Money, U.S. Air Corps 1922-1944" reinforces that conclusion. Putting together the author's words on the blurb and in the story seems to indicate that this story is a memoir of the author's search for identity. Pleasing pictures support the story well.
