VOYA: The third book in Horowitz's Gatekeepers series focuses on another member of the Five Gatekeepers whose job is to protect the world from the Old Ones. Jamie Tyler and his brother Scott are orphans who have always been able to read minds. Now fourteen, they are working for their latest foster parents by doing a mind-reading act in a rundown Reno theater, until the day two men from the Nightrise Corporation visit the theater and try to kidnap Jamie and Scott. Complications ensue, including a plot to kill a presidential candidate, a midnight raid on a correctional facility in the Nevada desert, and Jamie finding himself suddenly transported to Peru 10,000 years in the past, where he meets the other four Gatekeepers-or at least, one version of them. It turns out that the Five exist in more than one time and place, and Jamie is called upon to help the others defeat the Old Ones in this earlier time before returning to the twenty-first century to find Scott and ultimately fight the Old Ones again. In yet another exciting adventure story, readers learn a lot more about the Five and the Old Ones, getting some inkling of where the story might be going in future installments. Horowitz picks up the pace in this book, and ratchets up the tension in one more winner.
